In November 1923, A. Hitler led the Beer Hall Putsch. When Hitler and his followers marched from the beer hall to the Bavarian War Ministry to overthrow the Bavarian government, the police dispersed them. The Putsch failed, 16 SA members were killed, and he was arrested for high treason. Eventually, Hitler was tried and sentenced to five years' imprisonment at Landsberg Prison. Hitler was pardoned and released from jail in December 1924, He served only nine months of his sentence. While at Landsberg he dictated Mein Kampf (My Struggle) to his deputy Rudolf Hess. The book was an autobiography and an exposition of his ideology. It was published in two volumes in 1925 and 1926, selling about 240,000 copies between 1925 and 1934. By the end of the war, about 10 million copies had been sold or distributed.
